Top Ten Tips For Reading Out Loud To Young Children

Reading out loud develops a love for books, reading and learning.

What you read can range from very easy picture books to books with a lot of print.

It is amazing how much children can enjoy and understand what they hear long before they begin learning to read.

Our top ten tips for parents are:

Teach your child how to hold and care for books. This helps to promote the idea that books are special.

Capture your child’s interest by discussing titles and pictures before reading. Point out that both pictures and words can tell the story or provide information.

Let your child re-tell or pretend to read using the pictures. When children do this, they feel like a real reader and want to learn to read for real.

Talk about where to start reading. Use your finger to track the words to develop the idea of matching the spoken word to the printed word. Many children will start memorizing common words this way.

Read different types of books such as stories, information, and poetry books. There are several excellent magazines for children.

Family reading time after dinner is a great way to encourage reading for leisure. Children love to feel they are doing something that their parents do.

Be playful, enthusiastic, and expressive as you read. Choose a time to read when you have the time and energy for it.

Read books you and your child are interested in. The children’s librarian at your local library is an expert at helping with choices.

Be willing to read favourite stories over and over again. Children love repetition, and they learn something new every time.

Share ideas, feelings, and thoughts while you read to help your child make connections between their own life and what you are reading.

One To One

One To One is a FREE children’s literacy program that connects elementary students with trained literacy tutors (volunteers) to develop their literacy skills.

We work in the school (virtual training may be available) where the child is able to make mistakes, learn and grow.

Our program is aimed at the students who need just a little help and ‘One To One’ time to improve their skills.

We work closely with teachers, parents and caregivers to ensure that the short time the student is away from their class is productive and they do not miss out on other learning or activities.

We also (when able to hold workshops) provide a ‘Come Read With Me’ program for parents.

Parents are provided with helpful reading techniques and strategies to support early reading development.

Parents often find these strategies help minimize the anxiety of the child and the parent when it comes to home reading.

We are always looking for new volunteers to help with our program. If you have an hour or two a week and an interest in supporting our youth please CONTACT US.

Summer Program

Each summer we partner with other community organizations to develop and coordinate activities for children to enjoy.

All programs have an educational component.

Summer 2022

Art Program: This year we are partnering with ‘Chase and Area Young Learners Society ‘

We thought that there is no better way to show kids the power of art than to create a beautiful community art installation that benefits everyone.

We will be working with Joey Nash to conceptualize and manage the mural project along with other enthusiastic support.

The mural will be on the wall of Pete’s Pizza that borders Pocket Park.

The adults managing the project would be charged with the prep and foundational work, and the kids and Joey Nash would carry out the more detailed work.

Older Kids would have particular jobs and the youngest kids would have smaller and less central roles.

The Project is slated for the last weeks of August 2022.

A background of big sky, hills, trees, grass and flowers, filled meadow as it comes forward, with huge sunflower and honeybee in foreground - lots of pollinators amongst the flowers and lots of cool brushwork for young hands.

Thumper Book Club

The idea for ‘Thumper’s Book Club’ was formed several months ago after the third-grader had mentioned to Trowsse that he struggled to get into reading.

“So, it made me think you know, what can I do for this little guy to help him with his reading?”, says Trowsse.

“So I talked to my wife about it and we came up with maybe starting a little book club that might inspire him.”

Over the past few months, they’ve gotten into a routine; Leif will pick a book to read, and then bring it on the bus for Randy’s turn.

“Typically, we’ll both read the book, and then we’ll chat about it for our ten or fifteen minutes in the morning,” explains Trowsse.

“And yeah it’s been great. It’s been great for me as well.”

Since the club began, the pair have read more than a dozen books.
